Watch: Man arrested after allegedly crashing into car, fleeing into locals' backyards in Devonport

A video obtained by Newshub shows a man being arrested in the North Shore after allegedly crashing into a car and taking off on foot.

Newshub understands the crash took place on Devonport's Domain St on Thursday morning.

Waitematā East Area Prevention Manager Inspector Todd Moore-Carter said one person is in custody following an incident involving a stolen vehicle in Devonport earlier on Thursday morning.

At this stage, there are no reported injuries.

An eyewitness said the man was arrested after crashing a white car into the back of a neighbour's car.

The witness said at around 9:40am she was parking her car and heard a commotion.

She saw a man run from the car and through a neighbour's side fence.

Unable to get into the house, he then ran across the street into another house but the police ran after him and managed to arrest him and put him in a police car.

She said there were around six police cars on the street.

The witness said a few other cars were "side-swiped" in surrounding streets.

"This was a scary experience, especially for those whose houses he ran into, but thankfully no one was physically hurt."

A video obtained by Newshub shows a man being pinned down by police on the back deck of a house.

An officer can be heard saying, "give me your hand" before punching the man in the side.

The officer and another man then manage to pull his hands behind him and handcuff him.

The man, who is pinned on his front, then says, "I can't breathe, I can't breathe" and the officer tells the bystanders to back off and "let him breathe".

A yellow taser is lying on the ground near the man's feet - it's unclear whether it was used or not.

Later in the video an officer can be heard asking him, "What's your name?" but he does not reply.

Two officers then try to get the man to stand up. One can be heard saying, "On your feet, stand up". The man doesn't respond and the police eventually pull him up by his arms.

As he's led away the man can be heard yelling incoherent words repeatedly.

The witness who filmed the video called the man "a f***ing a**hole" and a mad man. He said the whole experience was "terrifying".

Moore-Carter said an investigation is underway into the wider circumstances of what happened.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 105 quoting file number P051152119.

People can also contact Crime Stoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

The incident comes as armed police surrounded a house in nearby Belmont and ordered the occupant to surrender. It is not linked to the Doman St arrest.

According to a Newshub cameraman at the scene, armed police have surrounded a house on Bardia Street.

Photos show at least three police cars and a number of officers outside the house.

School lockdown lifted

Bayswater School, Belmont Intermediate, Belmont Primary and Takapuna Grammar School all went into lockdown for 30 minutes earlier on Thursday.

Newshub understands the schools were locked down because of the Bardia Street stand-off.

Inspector Jason Homan said police are responding to an incident in Belmont following reports of a person with a firearm.

The incident was reported to police at around 10:47am and the Ministry of Education was advised.

A Police cordon is still in place at the intersection of Bardia and Moa St and locals are asked to avoid the area.
