Weather warnings lift, heavy snow and rain close roads in South Island

Wild weather warnings have lifted on Sunday after areas of the South Island were blanketed in snow overnight.

On Sunday morning MetService revealed most of the severe weather warnings which were in place overnight have now been lifted.

"Heavy rain about central parts of New Zealand has eased, and the warning and watches have been lifted. Heavy snow in Canterbury and Marlborough also has eased, and the warning is lifted," the forecaster said.

The lifted warnings include an orange heavy rain warning for Marlborough, an orange heavy snow warning for inland Marlborough south of Seddon, and Canterbury High Country, a heavy rain watch for Tasman and a heavy rain watch for Wellington.

But there are still road closures in place in Canterbury after areas of the region were covered in snow overnight.

State Highway 7 through the Lewis Pass from the Hanmer turn off to Springs Junction is closed because of heavy snow while SH73 from Arthur's Pass to Porters Pass between Springfield to Otira is also closed.

The weather is expected to be mild for the rest of the weekend for most of the country. On Sunday showers, occasionally heavy, are expected for Northland to Taranaki while Gisborne and Hawke's Bay is in for mostly fine weather with a few showers in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, Whanganui and Taihape to Wellington are in for periods of rain, heavy at times, before the weather clears this afternoon. Snow lowering to 600 metres is also expected for the Desert Road.

Moving south, rain and snow falling to 200 metres is forecast in Marlborough and Canterbury this morning before becoming fine in the evening. Banks Peninsula and coastal Buller can expect lingering showers.

Fine weather apart from clouds and isolated showers are forecasted for Westland and Otago while Dunedin, Clutha, Southland and Fiordland will get occasional showers and snow above 600 metres this morning.

Moving to Monday the North Island is in for mainly fine mornings with frosts in places, while the South Island can expect showers developing in the west, turning to rain south of the Glaciers in the evening. Everywhere else is mainly fine with morning frosts.
