Wet weather is forecast for parts of the country as the start of next week will bring rain and severe gales for the South Island and possible thunderstorms on Wednesday for the North Island.

There is heavy rain for the West Coast on Sunday, while the east coast and North Island experience a dry end to the week.

MetService issued heavy rain warnings at various times on Sunday for the west of the South Island, including Westland south of Otira, the Canterbury headwaters and rivers south of Arthur's Pass, the Otago headwaters, and Fiordland.

Civil Defence Emergency Management Canterbury issued a series of orange warnings across the South Island as heavy rain could cause surface flooding and slips, and severe northwest gales could cause damage to trees and powerlines.

"At this stage, it is going to remain an orange warning, but still has the possibility of going to red," Civil Defence said.

"We are looking at more significant spillover than normal, and it will go further east."

The rain is expected to stay for the west, with WeatherWatch predicting a cold front later on Monday and into Tuesday to push northwards over the South Island with "very heavy rain" and strong winds in the west ahead of this front.

"As winds change to the south on Tuesday and push up the east coast rain or showers follows and temperatures drop, so this means snow for the South Island ranges on Tuesday, possibly getting as low as 400m," Weather Watch said.

The North Island isn't expected to miss out on the wet weather with a chance of thunderstorms on Wednesday.

"Very cold upper air looks to force over the upper North Island on Wednesday afternoon, this brings a chance of thunderstorms and hail. Something to keep an eye on if current projections stay consistent."

Auckland is forecasted to have a cloudy Monday with afternoon showers and rain on Tuesday evening.

Wellington is forecasted to have a few showers and gale northerlies, gusting 100km/h in exposed places on Monday. These winds are expected to ease Tuesday afternoon, however, rain is forecasted for the evening.
