Auckland crime wave: Police investigating smash and grab at Michael Hill jewellery store in Newmarket

An Auckland jewellery store has been the target of burglary for the second time in just over a month as the city continues to deal with a crime wave.

Police said they're investigating after they responded to reports the Michael Hill jewellery store on Broadway in Newmarket had been broken into at just after 4am on Wednesday.

"A group of people have entered the store and stolen a number of items before fleeing in a vehicle," a police spokesperson said.

"That vehicle was later confirmed as stolen and located nearby."

Footage from the scene showed the front door smashed in, while officers were seen inside looking at the damage.

Police urge anyone with more information about the robbery to contact them.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact Police by calling 105 and quoting P051669753.

"Information can also be provided anonymously through Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111."

It comes just over a month after the same Newmarket store was hit by a brazen daylight robbery, with burglars smashing their way into cabinets on a Wednesday evening.

The latest robbery comes a day after thieves broke into at least five Auckland shops at a shopping complex on Moore St in Howick, while a liquor store was ram-raided in a separate incident.

Michael Hill jewellery stores have been a common target for burglars. Earlier this month, five offenders broke into a Takapuna store - with footage from the scene showing one of the store's front doors completely shattered and glass scattered over the entrance to the shop.
