Extra police will be on duty in the Auckland suburb of Clendon Park over the weekend, in relation to the discovery of human remains on Thursday.

The police were providing support to the occupants of a house on Moncrieff Avenue, where the remains were found.

Authorities were notified about the remains when the residents returned to their home with what the police describe as "unowned property".

Police said the residents were not believed to be involved in whatever had happened to the dead person.

They said identifying the person was a priority, and a postmortem was underway.
