Former Dilworth School teacher sentenced to eight years for sex offences

A former teacher at Dilworth School has been sentenced to eight years in jail for sex offences.

Leonard Cave appeared in the Auckland District Court after being found guilty of eight indecent assaults at a trial in June.

Cave was the former choir master and head of music at the Auckland school - and held teaching positions there for more than 10 years, starting in the 1970s.

Dilworth Trust board chair Aaron Snodgrass said abuse suffered by Old Boys is, and was, completely unacceptable.

The school was deeply sorry and Cave's offending was a gross breach of trust, he said.

This week, the school announced an independent panel to oversee its compensation programme for abused Old Boys and - seperately - an independent inquiry into abuses will be led by Dame Silvia Cartwright.
