Incredible CCTV footage captures moment car bursts into flames in failed ram raid at Hamilton optometrist store

CCTV footage has captured the moment a car burst into flames after a failed ram raid at a Hamilton optometrist store.

Thieves tried to break into Total Vision Optometrists on Grey St in Hamilton East at around 2:40am on Tuesday morning.

Footage supplied to Newshub shows a vehicle attempting to smash through the entrance of the store, but it but fails and sets the alarm off.

The vehicle then reverses back and tries to break through the entrance again but gets stuck.

The driver then starts accelerating in an effort to break through, causing smoke to come from the tyres, which quickly fills the store before the car bursts into flames.

A police spokesperson said the car was left running and the offenders fled in a different vehicle.

The optometrist store was one of five targeted - four of them ram-raids - on Tuesday morning in the space of three hours.

Bottle-O on Borman Road, TechStore on Horsham Downs Road, Holland Superette on Holland Road and Mobil service station on Cambridge Road were also targeted.

The ram raid at the TechStore was also caught on CCTV footage showing the vehicle smashing through the store's automatic doors before an offender walked into the store.

The ram raid at Holland Superette was also caught on camera showing the car reversing into the front of the store three times.
