Man facing multiple charges after Levin police stand-off

A 62-year-old man has been charged after a police stand-off in Levin last week.

The man has been charged with threatening to kill, causing harm by posting digital communication, arson, and possession of an offensive weapon.

Last Thursday the man barricaded himself at a property in Bledisloe St, Levin for over 24 hours before eventually being dragged out after a fire engulfed the house in flames.

Dozens of residents had to be evacuated from their homes in Bledisloe St and were forced to stay at nearby motels and at the Horowhenua District Library to keep them out of harm's way.

The 62-year-old was checked over by ambulance staff at the time and he was taken to hospital.

"The man has been released from hospital and is remanded in custody, scheduled to reappear in Levin District Court on 31 August," Manawatū area commander Inspector Sarah Stewart said in a statement.

"A number of investigations relating to the incident last week remain ongoing at present.

"As the matter is before the Court, Police cannot comment further at this time."
