A man who drove the wrong way down an Auckland motorway on-ramp has been taken into custody and will appear in court for reckless driving.

On Sunday morning, the man was videoed driving down the middle of the Greenlane on-ramp, which merges onto State Highway 1 heading north. Both lanes of cars queuing to get onto the motorway moved out of the way to allow the ute to pass.

Police confirmed they received numerous calls about this and said that at one point, the 52-year-old driver stopped his car and began walking on the motorway.

He was taken into custody at 11:25am.

"Police would like to thank members of the public who called Police to report this incident, as well as those members of the public who moved the man's car off to the side of the road after he got out of it," a spokesperson said.

"Fortunately no crashes have been reported to police as a result of the man's actions and nobody was injured."

The 52-year-old is scheduled to appear in the Auckland District Court on Monday for reckless driving.

The person who uploaded the video to Reddit was "shocked" to see the man driving the wrong way.

"Lucky he was going slow, but like he seemed completely oblivious and was just staring straight ahead," they said.
