The family members of the two children whose remains were found in suitcases in Auckland are believed to be in Korea.

The remains were found in suitcases purchased at an auction for an unclaimed locker, with Detective Inspector Tofilau Faamanuia Vaaelua confirming on Thursday the bodies were those of primary school-aged children and believed to have been there for several years.

Det Insp Vaaelua told reporters the children had yet to be formally identified but it was believed they had family in New Zealand.

He said it's possible the children's family were not aware they were dead.

In a report on Saturday, citing multiple unnamed sources, the New Zealand Herald said the children had relatives living in Asia. The outlet is now reporting they are believed to be in Korea.

During the press conference on Thursday, police revealed they are working with Interpol as part of the homicide investigation.
