A pod of dolphins are stranded on Whakanewha Bay on Waiheke Island.

The Department of Conservation told Newshub in a statement: "The animals are common dolphins, and there are estimated to be 10, including one calf. Unfortunately, two animals have already died."

Non-profit organisation Project Jonah posted on its Facebook: "We are coordinating with DOC and responding to a mass dolphin stranding on Waiheke Island.

"We have local medics onsite and senior staff with equipment on the way. Further details will follow."

DOC also said in its statement the next high tide for Whakanewha Bay will be just before 7:30pm.

"Staff from both organisations are either on the island or heading to it this afternoon to work on the rescue effort. Local iwi Ngati Paoa are at the scene supporting the rescue," A spokesperson for DOC said.
