Police continuing search for missing Rotorua kayaker more than 24 hours after his disappearance

Rotorua police and search teams continue to look for the missing 18-year-old kayaker who was last seen more than 24 hours ago. 

The 18-year-old Māori man was last seen at about 2:30pm on Wednesday when he went kayaking on the western side of the lake.

A police spokesperson said the search is "quite broad" with search teams being deployed to search multiple beaches and stream mouths along the western side of the lake. 

"The lake itself out to and around Makoia Island."

The missing man is described as about 188cm tall, with a slim build and wearing dark clothing. 

Police recovered the missing man's orange and blue kayak on Wednesday.
