Man arrested after woman found dead in Cambridge

Police have arrested a man in Te Aroha, Waikato after a woman was killed in Cambridge.

Emergency services were alerted to the woman's death at around 1:20am on Monday, a police spokesperson said. When police arrived at a house on Richmond Road they found a dead woman at the property.

Two neighbours told Newshub the couple who lived at the Cambridge homicide scene were renting and had moved in several months ago. A primary-school-aged boy also lived at the address with them.

"We are speaking with the man and an update on charges will be provided when able," police said.

Police aren't looking for anyone else in relation to this incident.

"We know this was a distressing incident for our Te Aroha and Cambridge communities and we want to thank them for their understanding while we made enquiries to locate him," police said.

A scene examination at the Richmond Road address in continuing, they added.

The community were told to expect to see an increased police presence while police continue the investigation into the woman's death.

Earlier, while police were hunting for the alleged offender, they urged residents to avoid picking up hitchhikers in the area.

"We are also advising people to avoid assisting anyone attempting to hitchhike in the area this morning," a police spokesperson said.
