Weather: Heavy snow closes roads in South Island, Bluebridge services cancelled as Wellington buffeted by severe gales

Heavy snow in the South Island has caused road closures and weather warnings while areas of the North Island are being battered by rain.

Weather warnings are in place across the South Islands including road snowfall warnings for Lewis Pass (SH7), Arthur's Pass (SH73), Porters Pass (SH73), Haast Pass (SH6), Lindis Pass (SH8), Crown Range Road and the Dunedin to Waitati Highway (SH1).

A heavy snow warning is also in place for Marlborough south of Ward and inland Canterbury above 300 metres.

The wild weather has also closed three roads down south. SH 8 from Fairlie to Twizel has been closed along with SH 85 from Palmerston to Kyeburn and SH 87 from Outram to Kyeburn.

NZTA said snow and ice have closed the roads and Kiwis are urged to delay or cancel their journeys.

MetServce said the heavy snow will continue into the afternoon for much of inland Canterbury and southern Marlborough.

Meanwhile, the lower North Island is being hammered by heavy rain and strong winds.

MetService said a heavy rain watch is in place for the eastern hills of Wellington and the hills and ranges of Wairarapa. Additionally, a strong wind watch is in place for Wellington.

The weather has forced the Bluebridge ferry to cancel all morning and afternoon services.

"The southerly affecting much of New Zealand today is causing large swells in Cook Strait, and these are forecast to continue until the early evening," Bluebridge said in a Facebook post.

"As a result, all morning and afternoon sailings today have been cancelled. We will look to resume sailing this evening for our 7:15 pm from Picton and our 8:30 pm from Wellington."

It comes after multiple travel disruptions plagued Auckland commuters on Monday as the city was blanketed in fog.

Early on Monday morning, Auckland Airport said 12 domestic regional flights had been cancelled and 13 delayed.

Domestic flights to Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin and Queenstown weren't impacted and no international flights were cancelled.

But the fog caused mayhem for ferry services with cancellations and replacements across the network.

MetService said Auckland can expect patchy fog for most of the morning followed by a few showers and rain in the evening.
