Wellington dad viciously attacked on first night out since daughter was born

A couple's first night out since the birth of their daughter has ended in "disaster" after a sickening attack.

Nick Crosby and Renee Hunter were spending a Saturday night out in the Wellington CBD with Nick's brother and sister-in-law who were visiting from Northland.

After a relaxing night, everything changed when Crosby was attacked by two males as the couple were leaving the CBD to catch a taxi home in the early hours of July 31 on Dixon St.

Crosby had to be resuscitated twice on his way to Wellington Hospital after the incident, according to a Givealittle page.

Hunter's mother Molly Daube created the Givealittle page and said Nick owned his own business, Coast2Coast Property Services, but it'll be a while till he gets back to work.

"He is no longer fighting for his life but it's going to be a long road to recovery and a long time before he will be able to work or even drive again, due to the frequent seizures he's experiencing," Daube wrote on the Givealittle page.

"Nick is currently in the neurology ward in Wellington Hospital trying to regain control of his body movements."

The Givealittle page has so far raised just over $9000 at the time of writing with the money going towards covering hospital expenses and the cost of living while Hunter can't work.

"Renee is struggling to pay for travel, extra expenses and just plain living since Nick is unable to earn an income anymore," Daube wrote.

"Please be generous and help them and their 6 kids out. They would genuinely appreciate any donation, no matter how small to help them get by."

Hunter told NZ Herald the ACC had given him a goal of "slowly looking at getting back to work by October 18".

"I'll slowly get back to normal but it will take a while. They [doctors] can't believe he is where he is now," Hunter said.

Hunter said the attack "came out of nowhere".

"It's just the anger we're trying not to hold on to. Whenever I think about what happened too much I feel angry," he told the Herald

Two men - both in their early 20s from Porirua - have been charged with intentionally causing grievous bodily harm.

They appeared in Wellington District Court and were granted bail and will reappear in court on Thursday.
