Hawke's Bay Police are appealing for information after a good samaritan was assaulted when they helped a woman being chased by a man following a family harm incident.
The incident happened on SH51 in Awatoto when they stopped their vehicle to help the woman at around 4:30am on Sunday.
The victim suffered serious facial and head injuries and remains in hospital.
A 34-year-old man has been arrested and is due to appear in Hastings District Court on Monday on an assault charge.
Police ask witnesses or motorists in the area at the time who have not already come forward to contact police.
