Last-minute reprieve for The White Lady: Auckland Council issues 12-month extension to licence

It's official: the iconic food truck The White Lady will stay - for another 12 months at least.

The iconic food truck has been operating on the streets of Auckland's CBD for the past 74 years, but recently its future was thrown into doubt following complaints from a nearby business over rubbish and blocked footpaths.

Councillor Richard Hills announced The White Lady received a 12-month extension to its license on Twitter after the Auckland Council reduced its annual licence to six weeks.

Hills said he requested Council staff work with The White Lady to address the issues and "get a good outcome for such an iconic business".

Chief burger flipper at The White Lady Max Washer said the Auckland Council confirmed late on Wednesday that its trading licence will be extended.

Washer said he and The White Lady team are "beyond ecstatic".

"We want to thank Auckland Council for believing that our little business has a place in this great city."

When Newshub spoke to Washer he said he and his staff are "having a celebration toastie".

He added the iconic food truck will celebrate its 75th birthday next year and promised there will be a lot to celebrate.

"No matter how your night's been you can always count on us being here. I have no intention of ever stopping providing that to our customers and every intention to have a party."

Auckland Central MP Chlöe Swarbrick told Newshub it's a "bloody good day for Auckland Central".

"It's a massive day of celebration and a bit of wake-up call for those in power in council."
