Police have confirmed the man wanted over a shooting in Christchurch boarded a flight to Napier before he was considered a suspect.

A police spokesperson said Hendrix Rawiri Jury's whereabouts remain unclear and police are still trying to locate him.

"We believe he is likely to be in the Hawke's Bay or Bay of Plenty areas but we can't rule out other parts of the North Island," a police spokesperson said in a statement.

Former Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters shared photos of the 27-year-old suspect on an Air New Zealand flight with the caption: "How did he get on this plane? How did the police not see him walking through the airport?"

Jury is wanted by police in connection to a broad daylight shooting in the suburb of Linwood on August 30.

Police said they are following every piece of information they receive and enquiries remain ongoing.

"We continue to remind the public not to approach Hendrix if you see him and instead call 111," they said.

"Information can be provided via 105 quoting file number 220830/8157 or alternatively, you can contact Crime Stoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
