An off-duty police officer has been charged with drink driving causing death after a cyclist died in the Auckland suburb of Flat Bush earlier this month.

The officer who was initially stood down while the investigation was carried out has since been charged with excess breath alcohol causing death, a police spokesperson said on Friday.

The crash - involving the cyclist, a moving vehicle and multiple parked vehicles - happened on Stancombe Rd in Flat Bush on September 17. The cyclist died at the scene.

Police said the officer will appear in the Manukau District Court next month.

"As the matter is now before the courts, police have no further comment."
