Thousands jolted by magnitude 5.8 earthquake near Wellington

Tens of thousands of people were jolted by a magnitude 5.8 earthquake near Wellington on Thursday.

GeoNet said the earthquake, which occurred at 9:07pm, was "strong". The quake was 30 km northeast of the French Pass and 51km deep.

Kiwis all around the country have reported feeling the shake with reports ranging from the top of the North Island all the way down to Invercargill.

As of time of publication, over 44,000 felt the quake, with the majority reporting only feeling light shaking. However, 44 people ranked the tremors as "extreme".

Kiwis have been quick to report the quake on social media.

National MP Christopher Bishop simply responded to the quake saying "eek".

"OMG that was a very long scary #eqnz; dropped covered and said expletives," one person tweeted.

"That lasted a bit longer than expected, finally calmed the family. #eqnz," another said.
