Auckland crime wave: Five youths arrested after four food outlets targeted

Five people have been arrested after two burglaries in south Auckland, as police investigate a spree of break-ins at food outlets overnight.

Police said they responded to an incident on Leonard Issitt Drive near Auckland Airport at 2:26am on Monday after reports a sushi store and a coffee shop were burgled.

"A short time later, police observed two vehicles travelling at high speed away from the area of the burglaries," a police spokesperson said. 

"No pursuit was initiated, however Eagle has provided overhead observations."

The spokesperson said a vehicle was subsequently stopped on Sharland Avenue and the second on Leaver Place.

"Enquiries are ongoing into the incident, however it is understood those arrested are responsible for the earlier burglary," the spokesperson said. 

"Five people were subsequently taken into custody without incident and will be referred to Youth Aid."

Footage from the sushi shop showed the entrance to the store damaged with shattered glass covering the ground around the front door.

Earlier in the morning, officers were called to Church Street in Onehunga where a hot dog store and a pizzeria were both broken into after 1am. 

Police said they have launched an investigation but have so far not arrested anyone for those burglaries.

"Anyone with any information which may assist Police is asked to contact us via 105, quoting job number P052264532," a police spokesperson said. 

"Information can also be provided anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111."

It comes just four days after Auckland had a night of crime where police responded to at least five burglaries across the city.

On the same day, a man went on a wild window-smashing spree in central Auckland leaving a furniture store in clean-up mode.
