A person has died following a serious crash near Whakatāne on Sunday night capping off a horror weekend on New Zealand's roads.
In a statement, police said a person died following a crash on Galatea Road in Omataroa.
Police said the crash occurred at around 9:10pm on Sunday and involved two vehicles.
The road is now open and an investigation into the crash remains ongoing, police said.
It comes after police confirmed four people died on New Zealand's roads on Friday and Saturday in separate crashes near Taupō, Wellington and Gisborne.
The crash on Sunday night takes New Zealand's death toll on the country's roads for the weekend to five.
