Waipā deputy mayor Liz Stolwyk says community is 'running out of patience' after third death on State Highway 1 near Cambridge

The Waipā deputy mayor says action needs to be taken by Waka Kotahi to prevent more deaths from occurring on State Highway 1 near Cambridge.

Three people have died in the past month on the bend of the intersection of SH1 and Hickey Rd.

One person died at around 4:53am on Tuesday after a crash between a truck and a van.

Another two people died on the same stretch of road on September 14, at around 3:40am, after a crash involving a car and an ambulance.

Waipā Deputy Mayor Liz Stolwyk told Newshub action needs to be taken to prevent this from happening again.

"It's a nasty stretch of road, we have known that for a long time and there's regular accidents on there so we really want to see some action taken."

Stolwyk said the Waipā Council has been having conversations with Waka Kotahi for over a decade to do something to improve the road.

"It's fair to say that as a community we are running out of patience on this particular matter."

She said it's devastating when the sirens blare out and she knows something horrible must have happened.

"It is absolutely gut-wrenching every time we hear this. We can hear the sirens from across the Waikato River and you're wondering, 'Who's child is this? Who's family member is this? Who's friend is this?'"

The deputy mayor told Newshub she understands it is not something that can be changed overnight.

"We understand that this particular project is now back on their radar but unfortunately, what we are not going to see any swift action."

Newshub has contacted Waka Kotahi for comment.
