Weather: Temperatures predicted to creep up for weekend after mid-week winter blast

Temperatures across the country are predicted to slowly creep back to normal after a bitterly cold outbreak from Antarctica this week.

"Snow was reported as far north as Taranaki and the Desert Road in the North Island even down to sea level on beaches around Otago, Canterbury and Southland," MetService meteorologist Amy Rossiter said.

MetService has put a road snowfall warning for Remutaka Hill Road until early Friday morning.

It's like to be a frosty Friday for many but temperatures will be back to more normal spring temperatures throughout the weekend.

On Friday morning, rain is expected throughout the south and east of both the North and South Islands, but people can expect clear skies and a more settled weather forecast as we head into the weekend.

"This will be good news for those wanting to head outdoors this weekend, whether it's with the kids for school holidays, or to watch the start of the Women's Rugby World Cup in Auckland, or the Cricket Tri-Series in Christchurch," Rossiter said
