Wellington residents are being warned to expect delays as the capital continues to crumble under wet weather.

Over the weekend, Wellington City Council reported 20 slips across the city and as the sun came up on Monday it unveiled a further two large slips in the suburb of Karori.

The two large slips came down overnight in Karori, on Chaytor St and Birdwood St, two major routes out of the suburb.

A council spokesperson said the Birdwood St slip has completely blocked the road, a Newshub camera operator was filming the slip at the time when more land began to slide

"There was a bit of rumble, and I thought a car was coming, then I realised the road was closed, I turned around and I saw some more rubble, dirt, stone and rocks coming down."

And the council warns the Birdwood St slip won't be cleared for several days.

The Chaytor St slip has come down and across one lane. The council has put in place a stop-and-go traffic arrangement while contractors work to clear the site.

"Motorists are urged to use Old Karori Road/Whitehead Road and Curtis Street to enter and exit Karori and expect delays while the slips are cleared."
