Witness footage shows man being held at gunpoint by officers in Auckland's Eden Terrace after he fired air rifle

A dramatic incident caught on video shows a man being held at gunpoint by police officers in Auckland who believed he had earlier discharged a firearm.

However, it's been revealed the gun turned out to be an air rifle.

The video footage, shot by a bystander and posted on social media, showed the man with his hands up against a wall in the Auckland suburb of Eden Terrace - with at least one police officer pointing a gun at him.

Snr Sgt Dave Plunkett said officers carried out the armed vehicle stop on Upper Symonds St on Sunday evening after receiving reports of a gun being fired in the suburb of Parnell earlier in the day.

"After speaking with the man, and a subsequent search of his address, it was established that he had fired an air gun in the original incident," Plunkett said in a statement.

Plunkett said the police took reports of incidents involving guns seriously.

Police said the man involved was not facing any charges.

"In this incident, no charges have been laid however the man has been spoken to about the safe use and operation of his air gun," Plunkett said.

The footage of the weekend incident was viewed more than 300,000 times on the social media platform TikTok.

While the caption on the video said the man was being held up for carrying a box of RTDs, police said there was nothing to substantiate that suggestion.
