Fans celebrate in south Auckland after Samoa beats Tonga at Rugby League World Cup, police monitor gathering

Passionate and jubilant scenes have emerged in south Auckland after Samoa beat Tonga at the Rugby League World Cup  in the UK on Monday morning.

Police monitored the large gathering in the Māngere town centre at around midnight on Sunday, where footy fans lit fireworks and tooted their horns ahead of the 3:30am kick-off.

Once moved on, the party continued in Ōtara with similar scenes.

The quarter-final clash saw Samoa winning 20-18 to book themselves a spot in the semi-finals where they will play England.

Reporter Emma Olsen told AM on Monday fans are honking their horns and people are flying their flags out of their cars.

"As you can see behind me, it's turned into a massive dance party, everyone here is just in such high spirits," she said.

"We do have a police presence, so police are here overseeing all of it but they're in good spirits too. As long as everyone stays safe they're happy as larry."

It comes a day after police dispersed a large crowd in south Auckland on Saturday evening where similar scenes occurred.

Footage showed fans letting off fireworks and standing on roofs and bonnets of moving vehicles.

A Newshub camera operator said around 1000 people were present at the gathering in the Māngere town centre.

Counties Manukau West area commander inspector Matt Srhoj said on Saturday morning there will be a visibly increased presence in and around town centres in south Auckland, as they try to keep exuberant supporters and the local community safe.

"Our staff have been working with the local Member of Parliament, local board, business association, and community leaders to appeal to fans to keep their celebrations peaceful and respectful of the whole community," Srhoj said.
