In pictures: Last blood moon until 2025 seen across New Zealand

Kiwis were treated to a spectacular show on Tuesday night with a total lunar eclipse turning the moon blood red.

A total lunar eclipse happens when the moon, Earth and sun line up during a full moon, blocking any sunlight.

Because the Earth is in the way the light is bent around Earth's atmosphere giving the moon a red hue.

It was the last total lunar eclipse until 2025 and people made the most of it.  Stunning photos emerged on Wednesday showing the blood-red moon but Kiwis also had some fun with it.

AM co-host Melissa Chan-Green was discussing the many beautiful pictures sent in by viewers on Wednesday when one caused some suspicion.

The picture shows what looks like a mandarin on a black background, and it didn't go unnoticed by stand-in newsreader Oriini Kaipara who exclaimed, "It looks like an orange".

"I think it is an orange," Chan-Green replied while laughing. The next photo also appeared to be an artistic interpretation showing what looked like a slice of salami.

"That's a slice of salami looking like the blood moon. We did say you could send in your joke moon shots too," Chan-Green said.
