Water dragon stolen from Nelson wildlife park found, but female still missing

A water dragon that was stolen from Nelson's Natureland Wildlife Park has been found, but a second dragon is still missing.

The pair of water dragons went missing from their enclosure at the wildlife sanctuary last month and were initially believed to have been stolen for either breeding or to be sold.

Natureland Wildlife Trust chair Glenn Turner made a passionate plea for their return on AM in October.

"Give them back, we want them back and if you drop them back we'd be really appreciative.

"These are defenceless, harmless animals and you're also destroying a charitable trust, we're a small conservation programme."

On Monday morning Turner told AM host Patrick Gower the male reptile Scauldron had been located.

"The great news is Scauldron has been found, we had a local resident see him sitting on a fence," Turner said.

He told AM police had apprehended a man who admitted to stealing Scauldron, but then let the reptile go.

However Marge was still missing.

"What it means for Marge is we understand she was not stolen but managed to escape when Scauldron was stolen from his enclosure, so we believe Marge is still nearby and we are trying to find her."

One of Scauldron's keepers at the park Alex Rimmer told AM they were starting to lose faith Scauldron would be returned.

She said he was safe and recovering from his ordeal.

Turner thanked the people of Nelson who had been looking out for the missing reptiles and asked for them to continue until Marge was found.

"Let's bring Marge home!" Gower added.
