Watch: Newscub Iraia and Surf Lifesaver on water safety and what to do if you get caught in a rip

Nothing beats a classic Kiwi summer like spending a day with whānau and friends at the beach or lake. Of course it's important to bring along the essentials like a beach towel, sunblock and food, but it's just as important to remember to check your water safety skills before you head out.

Westpac distributes Rashies every summer promoting water safety and CPR awareness amongst communities.

The Newscubs, supported by Westpac, will represent the tamariki of New Zealand across our news and current affairs platforms: AM, The Project and Newshub.co.nz, teaching us all about water safety!

Armed with Westpac rescue rash vests ('Rashies') and a microphone, our mini reporters will take to the local beaches, to talk to their peers and professionals on live television, demonstrating tips on how to stay safe around the beaches and lakes in Aotearoa this summer.

Newscub Iraia spoke to Surf Lifesaver Harry Mellor about water safety tips and what to do if you get caught in a rip. Watch the full video above.
