The organiser of Bay Dreams says they are "deeply saddened" after a woman suffered a fatal seizure after the festival.

Police are investigating the death of a woman who died in Tauranga Hospital on Sunday, several days after she reportedly had a seizure while leaving the festival at Trustpower Baypark on January 3.

Festival organiser Toby Burrows confirmed to the NZ Herald the woman suffered a seizure just outside of the festival grounds as patrons were leaving the event.

"We know that a female that was with medical staff outside the festival was transported by ambulance to hospital and later passed," Burrows told Newshub. "We don't know anymore than that."

"We are deeply saddened by this news and our heartfelt sympathies and respect go out to the woman's family and friends."

Police are making inquiries into the death of the woman on behalf of the Coroner.

Bay Dreams is an annual R18 music festival held in Tauranga and Nelson.

Thirty-thousand people were expected to attend the Mount Maunganui event and 50,000 in Nelson.

The festival has been running since 2016, and this year featured the likes of Diplo, Denzel Curry, Sticky Fingers, Hybrid Minds and more.
