COVID-19: Ministry of Health reports 19,179 new community cases, 57 virus-related deaths, 333 people in hospital, 8 in ICU

The number of new COVID-19 cases has fallen to under 20,000, the Ministry of Health has revealed.

In its latest COVID update released on Monday, the ministry said there were 19,179 new community cases of COVID-19 and a further 57 virus-related deaths over the past week.

Of those deaths, one was a person less than 10 years old and another was aged between 10 and 19 years.

The update covered the seven-day period from Monday, January 9 to Sunday, January 15.

The Health Ministry said 333 people remained in hospital with the virus, eight of whom were in intensive care.

Overall, New Zealand has reported over two million COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began.

Last week, the Health Ministry reported 21,685 new cases, 52 deaths and 422 people in hospital.
