The possible presence of "foreign matter" in Harmony beef and caramelised onion sausages has resulted in the product being recalled.

In a statement released by New Zealand Food Safety (NZFS), it said it supports The Neat Meat Company's decision to recall its product following concerns of possible "foreign matter".

NZFS deputy director-general Vincent Arbuckle said the affected sausages have a best-before date of January 20, 2023, and "could contain blue plastic".

"If you have bought any of these sausages, you should not consume them. Consumers should carefully check the best before date, throw out any affected product, and contact The Neat Meat Company Ltd for a full refund."

Arbuckle is urging anyone who has consumed the product and is worried about their health to contact their health professional or call Healthline on 0800 611 116.

"The products have not been exported and NZFS has not received any notifications of associated injury."

He added the recalled sausages were distributed nationwide in New World, PAK'nSAVE and Four Square stores.

Arbuckle said NZFS will work with The Neat Meat Company to understand how the product became contaminated and "prevent its recurrence".
