Pictures of the destruction left by Cyclone Hale show muddy flooded roads, a car pulled from deep water and fallen trees. 

The top of a blue ute can just be seen in pictures sent to Newshub, with passengers inside surrounded by dark brown flooded water.

Flooding has closed Hot Water Beach Rd. Small ripples of water can be seen washing over the top of the road, while only patches of green grass are all that's left of the surrounding farmland.

The water level on McLean Rd in Waipu is so high flooded water is seen close to surging over the bonnet of a car driving through it.

Big swells can be seen thumping the rocks of a seawall at Whitianga beach.

Video shared by NIWA weather shows "substantial" beach erosion in Whitianga, only a matter of metres can be seen between the deck of one bach and the wild waves.
