Police are searching for a "dangerous" member of Black Power who "should not be approached".

Teina Jareau Haddon is being sought in relation to a serious incident in Nelson on December 30.

A warrant is currently out for his arrest and Detective Senior Sergeant Lex Bruning said the 33-year-old Black Power member is considered "dangerous" and "should not be approached".

He's described as being of a large, solid build with distinctive facial tattoos.

"We know Teina has associates and links to the Victory Square and Appleby areas of the Nelson/Tasman region, and expect that he may be mobile in the area," the Det Snr Sgt said.

"We believe Teina can assist our investigation into the incident that left a person seriously injured."

Bruning said there is no risk to the wider public, but it's important that Haddon is found.

"Our message to Teina would be to hand himself in, or for anyone who sees him to call us immediately."

Anyone who sees Haddon, or has knowledge of his location, should call Police on 111.
