A sinkhole has closed a road in a popular Coromandel holiday spot after it appeared overnight.

Thames Coromandel District Council said a small section of Papanui Road in Whangamatā is closed on Monday because of the sinkhole.

The affected area, opposite 213 Papanui, has been marked with cones and the road closed between the intersections with Ruru Street and Gillian Street. Residents can still access their properties.

A council spokesperson told Newshub the sinkhole appears to be caused by material being washed away beneath the road surface through a stormwater pipe.

They said an investigation is underway to determine the extent of repairs needed and the road is expected to remain closed until Tuesday.

It comes after the region was hammered by heavy rain and wild weather over the festive season as Cyclone Hale swept through.
