A Whangārei teenager with an inoperable brain tumour who has been missing for more than a week has been located safe and well.

Sixteen-year-old Emily went missing on December 30 and, until Tuesday, had been unreachable.

Step-mum Ann-Maree Peacock posted on Facebook that Emily has now been in contact with police.

"Efforts are being made to assure her safety going forward. Thank you so much for sharing and highlighting her disappearance and for everyone who helped locate her."

Ann-Maree went on to tell Newshub "we are just happy to know she's been located".

Later on Tuesday police advised Newshub that "a 16-year-old previously reported as missing has now been located safe and well".

Her step-mum described Emily as "trusting and naive", with a "pleasant and helpful" attitude.

She was also described as having pronounced scarring on her head, mostly covered by hair, due to previous surgeries for an inoperable brain tumour.
