Two people died after crashes on the South Island on Sunday night

Two people died in crashes on the South Island on Sunday night.

In a statement on Monday, police said one person died following a crash on Southland's Dipton Winton Highway at around 11:42pm on Sunday.

"One person died at the scene [and] two other people were taken to hospital with moderate and serious injuries," police said. The collision involved a tanker and a car.

In another crash, police confirmed one person died in a single-vehicle crash on the Geraldine-Fairlie Highway at about 6:15 pm on Sunday.

Police said the roads for both crashes are closed and diversions have been put in place.

Police are also investigating how the crashes happened.
