Locals raise funds for 'loved' teacher whose home was destroyed by landslide in Mangawhai

Locals from the Northland town of Mangawhai are getting behind a "loved" teacher whose home was destroyed in a landslide, raising money to help with her recovery.

Jackie Fanning's home in Mangawhai was hit by a landslide during severe downpours and flooding in the region last week.

The landslide destroyed her home and all her belongings with it.

Speaking to the NZ Herald, Fanning said the sound of the landslides reminded her of an earthquake.

"Basically, I just ran with just the clothes I was wearing," she said. "The slips were coming down as I was running."

A Givealittle page set up for Fanning by Mangawhai Beach School deputy principal Emma Grieve had raised more than $30,500 at the time of writing.

Fanning barely escaped her home "with only the clothes she had on", Grieve said.

She was a valued member of the Mangawhai community, a "loved" teacher and an active member of the local Waka Ama Group - which teaches teenagers about sportsmanship and teamwork on the water, Grieve added.

"We would love to help Jackie rebuild her home, which she has worked so hard for, and help replace her lost belongings and vehicle.

"Please support us in supporting a beautiful lady who gives so much to others daily."
