Magnitude 4.8 earthquake south of Picton felt by thousands of people

A magnitude 4.8 earthquake just south of Picton has been felt by over 14,000 people.

On Tuesday, GeoNet recorded the earthquake which happened at 8:26pm.

On the GeoNet website, it was considered a "moderate" shake at a depth of 28km.

Several people on Twitter said they also felt the earthquake in Blenheim, Wellington and Nelson.

"A good rumble here in Picton," one user commented.

"Good shake in Wellington," another said.

"Bit of a jolt in Blenheim," a third wrote.

The majority of people who reported they felt the 4.8 magnitude quake described it as "light" or "weak".
