A Surf Life Saving NZ spokesperson told Newshub an inflatable rescue boat spotted a shark in the waters near the beach during the 2023 Canterbury Championship event at around 9:30am on Saturday.

The spokesperson said everyone was told to get out of the water, including the public.

It comes amidst a heatwave that has seen temperatures reach over 30C in Canterbury.

The Surf Life Saving NZ spokesperson said while it is great people are flocking to the beach it is important for beachgoers to remember to swim between the flags on patrolled beaches to ensure everyone returns home safely.
