Thousands report feeling 4.8 quake in central NZ

A magnitude 4.8 earthquake has struck near the top of the South Island.

GeoNet said it had a depth of 48km and was located 30km west of Blenheim.

The quake struck at 10:11am.

Thousands of people have reported to GeoNet that they felt the earthquake, with the majority saying there was weak or light shaking.

Kiwis have been quick to share their experiences of the quake on social media.

"Felt that one in Welly couldn't tell if it was a truck or not," one person wrote on Twitter.

"That shake was bizarre. I didn’t feel a thing and only one of my computer monitors shook. Thought I was having a dizzy spell," another wrote.

A third person wrote, "Felt that little wobble… just like someone running past my desk!"
