Tropical Cyclone Judy is unlikely to affect Aotearoa's weather, with anticipations it will intensify and move southwards near Vanuatu.
In an update provided by MetService, the forecaster said Cyclone Judy is expected to intensify on Tuesday and Wednesday and could reach severe tropical cyclone category three or above.
"Large waves, heavy rain, and gale to storm force winds are expected to impact Vanuatu, with hurricane-force winds possible near the centre from tonight. Strong winds and large waves could also affect parts of New Caledonia from Wednesday," MetService's website said.
In a Twitter post by NIWA, it said the severity of Tropical Cyclone Judy could reach category three or more in the next 36 hours.
Cyclone Judy is then expected to turn southeast on Thursday and move out of the tropics later on Friday.
"This system is then expected to track eastwards, and lie to the far northeast of New Zealand, without impacting Aotearoa," NIWA said.
Another tropical low is expected to approach Vanuatu from the west and then turn southeast by Friday.
"[Then] moving near Vanuatu or New Caledonia during Friday and Saturday."
MetService said there is a moderate risk of the system developing into a tropical cyclone on Thursday and an even higher risk on Friday.
But that system is also unlikely to affect Aotearoa.
