Emergency services swarm Queenstown restaurant after fire breaks out

Emergency services are responding to a fire at a Queenstown restaurant on Sunday morning.

Pictures from the scene show smoke pouring out of the Speight's Ale House on Stanley Street in Queenstown.

A Fire and Emergency NZ (FENZ) spokesperson said it responded with six appliances, an aerial appliance along with additional support vehicles.

Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) said due to the fire roads are closed in the area and locals are asked to avoid the area.

An eyewitness told Newshub the fire is now under control.

“It looked like it was in the yellow building first and they had it under control and then flames soared up and looked to be in both buildings," she said.

"They also used grinders to pull up the roof of the bar to get in. Looks to be under control now.”

Another eyewitness James Allan told NZ Herald the fire started "pretty small" before the whole building burst into flames.

"Then suddenly poof, the whole building just burst into flames and it's now pretty significant," Allan told NZ Herald.

"This is in the centre of the city and the entire town's stuck. Buses and trucks unable to move, startled tourists and locals who have been evacuated from hotels and apartments just looking on."

It's currently unclear if it's just the Speight's Ale House on fire or if other buildings are affected.

Police said there are no reports of any injuries and inquiries are ongoing to determine how the fire started.
