Five teenagers have been arrested after fleeing from police and then going nearly 200km/h on an Auckland motorway on Friday morning.

The five teenagers, aged 15 and 16, were driving on Pah Rd in Royal Oak at 3:31am when a patrol car tried to stop them.

A police spokesperson said the car sped away and officers decided not to pursue it, in line with their policy.

"It was located by Eagle a short time later, travelling at speeds up to around 180km/h on SH16," the spokesperson said.

"The car has left the motorway and proceeded to travel down Great North Road where it was spiked in New Lynn before being abandoned in Avondale."

The teenagers fled from the car but were all caught nearby and taken into custody at around 4am.

The spokesperson said charges are pending.
