Navy divers called in to help search for missing Gisborne man Joseph Ahuriri

Navy divers have been called in to help search for the missing Gisborne man Joseph Ahuriri.

CCTV last caught Ahuriri filling up his white Toyota Hilux at the Waitomo Fuel Stop at Bay View, near Napier, on the same morning Cyclone Gabrielle struck.

But efforts to locate the 40-year-old have proven unsuccessful, with all possible roads he could have driven on already being searched.

Police said Navy divers will conduct underwater searches of the coastline near the Esk Valley from Friday.

Last week, Insp Martin James, of Hawke's Bay, slammed what he described as false speculation that a second person could be seen in the footage of Ahuriri.

"The investigation team has extensively reviewed the CCTV recording in question and is satisfied that the only person shown in the recording is Joseph Ahuriri," James said. "The claims of a second person appear to relate to what is in fact an open door on Joseph's vehicle."

Anyone with information about Ahuriri's whereabouts is urged to come forward.
