Several streets in Pukekohe were cordoned off on Sunday afternoon after reports of gunfire.

Emergency services swarmed to the town south of Auckland as the incident unfolded on Birdwood Rd.

A police spokesperson told Newshub they were called around 12:50pm to reports of a firearms incident.

In an update at 7:30pm, they said cordons have been lifted, however police will "maintain a presence in the area overnight".

"Enquiries into the circumstances of the incident today are continuing," they added.

Witnesses say they heard multiple gunshots before the police Eagle helicopter arrived along with armed police officers with dogs.

"Ambulances and the chopper are on Birdwood and Beatty Rd. The whole night people were up there playing music and shouting their lungs out not considering the neighbours' peace at all," a witness told the NZ Herald.

"Now there's a shooting there and a fight. Apparently, poor kids are involved too."
