Police are on the hunt for 36-year-old Sam Murray following a shooting at Porirua's Titahi Bay on Friday, leaving one person with serious injuries.

In a statement, Detective Senior Sergeant Peter Middlemiss said Murray is wanted for his arrest following a "violent" incident in Owhiti St.

"The victim suffered a gunshot wound to their leg and remains in a serious but stable condition in hospital."

Det Snr Sgt Middlemiss said a "large" number of police are involved in the investigation and subsequent enquires.

"We have executed a number of search warrants in relation to the incident, however, Murray and the weapon involved remain at large."

Det Snr Sgt Middlemiss said Murray isn't believed to be a direct threat to the public - but he's possibly armed and "should not be approached".

Adding Murray has ties to Hawke's Bay so could have travelled out of the Wellington region to Hawke's Bay.

The 36-year-old, with 'Mongrel Mob' and 'Porirua' tattooed across his face is believed to be avoiding police.

Det Snr Sgt Middlemiss is urging anyone with knowledge of Murray's whereabouts to call 111 immediately and reference case file number 230312/5899.
