Police seek information after 'suspicious' fire outside National Library in Wellington

Information is being sought from the public after what's beleived to be a suspicious fire outside the National Library in Wellington. 

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) and police responded to the fire on Molesworth St at about 7:40pm on Monday evening.

A police spokesperson said the "suspicious" fire caused minor damage to the National Library before it was extinguished.

Anyone who may have seen people acting suspiciously near the library between 7pm and 8pm on Monday is asked to get in touch with the police on 105 or online on 105.police.govt.nz using Update Report and referencing file number 230313/7727.

Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111. 

A spokesperson for the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) said no staff or taonga were in danger from the fire and thanked emergency services for their "quick response".

The spokesperson added the library will open on Tuesday but there may be disruptions to normal operating hours.

A police investigation is underway and DIA cannot comment further, the spokesperson said.
