Posie Parker protest: Hundreds gather in Wellington in support of transgender rights

Hundreds of people have protested in Wellington against gender activist Posie Parker.

Parker, whose real name is Kellie-Jay Keen Minshull, held a rally in Auckland's Albert Park on Saturday as part of her Let Women Speak tour.

She was also due to speak in Wellington on Sunday but flew out of New Zealand on Saturday night.

Parker said that advice from police and her security team was to leave the country following the Auckland protest.

"The end result was that I spent most of my day with the protection of police who genuinely believed I was lucky to be alive. The advice was that I should go home," Parker tweeted.

Even though Parker wasn't in Wellington, hundreds of people still showed up at Civic Square on Sunday anyway in support of transgender rights.

Many held placards and pride flags. Signs had messages including "trans rights are human rights", "trans = taonga", and "protect our trans whānau".

Here is a selection of photos from the demonstration.
